Mucheleka not convinced Zambia must continue borrowing

Independent Lubansenshi Member of Parliament Patrick Mucheleka says he is not convinced that the country must continue to borrow.

Mr. Mucheleka notes that with the increase in the external debt ceiling, government should introduce an element of transparency and accountability on how the funds will be used, so that the funds go towards the intended purposes.

Mr. Mucheleka says every time the country wants to borrow, the Finance Minster should tell the nation people how they intend to utilize the such funds and also indicate how the money borrowed in the past has been utilized.

He adds that there should be mechanisms in place to save the funds from being abused and being subject of corruption.

Mr. Mucheleka further states that government before borrowing should look at the capacity of the country to repay and not borrow anyhow simply because they have been allowed to borrow up to K60 billion.

He also notes the need for government to work towards clearing its debt before rushing into borrowing more so that the country does not find itself in a debt crisis.
