Lusaka Water switches off 30 boreholes

The Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company has switched off 30 boreholes in Lusaka which have run dry in a bid to avoid damaging the pumping equipment.

And the company has hinted that Lusaka will continue experiencing erratic water supply until the onset of the rainy season.

Company marketing and Public Relations Manager Topsy Sikalinda has confirmed the development to QFM News that most of the boreholes have low water levels.

Mr. Sikalinda says the switching off of some boreholes is a temporal measure meant to sustain the ground water sources and expand the lifetime of the boreholes.

He explains that the current production capacity for water is about 258 million liters per day, while demand has increased to over 400 million liters per day.

Mr Sikalinda notes that Lusaka city is expanding everyday with an estimated 3 million people compared to the population of about 800 thousand people in 1990 when the company started operating.
