Non –Governmental Organizations’ Coordinating Council (NGOCC) has welcomed the decision by President Edgar Lungu to appoint Cecilia Mbewe as the acting Clerk of the National Assembly following the retirement of Doris Mwiinga.
NGOCC Executive Director Engwasi Mwale says the decision resonates with the NGOCC’s advanced calls for the need to balance power between women and men whenever making new appointments or any changes in decision making positions.
Ms Mwale says this appointment should be one in isolation, but must be accelerated across sectors in lines with Zambia’s Commitment to advancing women empowerment and their full participation at all level of decision making
She says that this is one way which will entail Zambia meeting the 50-50 representation threshold of women and men at all levels as per the African Union and SADC protocols on Gender as well as the provisions in the Gender Equity and Equality Act.
