Chiyangi backs underfire keeper

Nkana coach Aggrey Chiyangi is backing his young second choice goalkeeper Frederick Mwansa to flourish following criticism over his performance over the weekend.

Mwansa came under fire last Saturday, after letting in three second-half goals in Nkana’s 6-3 home win, in a league match against 11th-placed Nakambala Leopards.

The goalkeeper was picked ahead of number one choice Scott Ngokane, who was dropped from the team following a string of modest displays, with the major one coming on October 15 in Nkana’s 4-0 loss at home to Zanaco in the Barclays Cup semi-finals.

Mwansa joined Nkana this season from Division 1 club Kalulushi Modern Stars and has already made five starts for the 12-time champions.

“Yes, he didn’t do well but, you see he is one of our promising goalkeepers and sometimes experience comes the hard way,” Chiyangi said.

“We really have to trust in the boy at this point because where are we going to get another goalkeeper?

“So we have to work with the same players and eventually they will reach that level too with encouragement.”

Mwansa is again favourite to start this Sunday in Kitwe when second-placed Nkana host an in-form Napsa Stars who are 10th and undefeated in their last nine matches.
