Speaker of the National Assembly, Patrick Matibini has commended Members of Parliament for their commitment to the ideals and principles of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) which include safeguarding peace and driving positive democratic change through political dialogue and concrete action.

The National Assembly is holding its first ever IPU seminar to familiarize Members of parliament with discussions and debates tackled during the IPU main assembly and related meetings.

Dr. Matibini says meetings such as that of the IPU and other International bodies provide opportunities for parliamentarians from across the world to share best practices and learn from each other.

Speaking when he officially opened the seminar, Dr. Matibini says the rationale for localizing these topics is to enable Members of Parliament identity with the issues that were discussed and see how best they can contribute to the implementation of the various resolutions within a local setting.

He explains that adopting this kind of arraignment of holding local seminars is also one way of ensuring that Parliamentarians get value for money spent on these tours of duty and that the value trickles down to everyone through sharing of information.

Areas being tackled during this seminar include among others, early child marriage, sustainable development goals, and focus on how political parties both ruling and opposition can put aside political affiliations and collaborate in order to enhance national development.

Speaking at the same event, Clerk of the National Assembly, Cecilia Mbewe has encouraged Parliamentarians to take part in the discussion saying the seminar will result in an enriching experience as it will serve as a platform for discussing issues emanating from the IPU resolutions.
