Zambia has commemorated the day of the African Child with a call for children to get involved in development activities both as agents and beneficiaries of development.

The commemoration which was initially supposed to be held on 16th June,2018, but could not proceed owing to the funeral of late former Gender Minister Victoria Kalima was held today, 19th June.

In a speech read on his behalf by ministry permanent secretary, Joe Kapambwe, youth, sport and child development minister, Moses Mawere said this year’s Day of the African Child under the theme, “leaving no child for Zambia’s development behind”, is a clear reminder for children to be involved in the development of various policies.

Mr. Mawere says children are agents of change and therefore need to fully involve them in decisions that affect their wellbeing.

He has also noted the need for collective responsibility in ensuring that vices such as child abuse, sexual violence and defilement are eliminated from the society.

The minister says in order to address the various challenges facing children in Zambia, government has developed the children’s code bill, has developed and is implementing the national strategy on ending child marriage and adopted the national child policy.

And UNICEF Chief for Child Protection, Katlin Brasic has reminded government and society on the need for children to be treated equally regardless of race, religion, ability, language or where they live.

Meanwhile Children in the country have called on government to put in place effective measures and implement policies that will address various challenges they face.
