The opposition UPND has charged that the recent austerity measures announced by Finance Minister Margret Mwanakatwe have clearly given a signal that the PF have destroyed the economy.

Mrs Mwanakatwe announced last week that the President had ordered cancellation of some existing loans, banned the issuance of letters of credit and guarantees to state owned enterprises, terminated financing of development projects that are below 80 per cent completion and cut down on ministerial travels with immediate effect.

But UPND Spokesperson Charles Kakoma says this is clear admission of failure to rule by the PF.

He says Zambians should open their eyes and realize that the PF are not taking the country anywhere.

And Mr Kakoma says the UPND demands that President Edgar Lungu acts on the Financial Intelligence Centre report.

He says President Lungu should not look at the faces of those cited in the report.

And the MMD says it’s greatly saddened and disturbed by the Patriotic Front (PF) government’s indifference to the revelations and accusations of corruption of all kinds and at different levels.

Acting MMD Spokesperson Cephas Mukuka has since challenged the PF government to respond to these revelations and accusations which are not only coming from opposition figures, but even from PF members as well as institutions such as the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC).

He notes that no single day passes without a story of stolen public funds, and related scandals.

Dr. Mukuka says the MMD is surprised that people entrusted with the governance of the country have chosen to be quiet in the face of these serious allegations of corruption.

He states that in the absence of answers, the conclusion is that the PF government is engaging in very serious vices of corruption and abuse of power.

He says the purported stolen funds can build capital projects to the levels of the University Teaching Hospital, and the University of Zambia several times over.
