5 Counterfeit sugar suspects charged

Esther katongo ZPPolice in Lusaka have charged five suspects among them four Burundi and one Congolese nationals in connection with the seized sugar suspected to be counterfeit product following an operation conducted on 4th and 5th June, 2018 in Lusaka’s Zanimuone area and City market.

Police Spokesperson Esther Katongo has named the suspects as Claudin Uwambabazi aged 36, Habakubaho Bagonza aged 42, Tuyisenge Javier aged 24, Evaristo Ngeza aged 41 and Shombo Emile aged 23.

Ms Katongo says the accused have been charged with three counts of forgery of Trademarks contrary to section 5 (1) (g) of the Merchandise Marks Act Chapter 405 of the laws of Zambia, Sale of goods bearing false trade description contrary to section 6(1)(a) of the Merchandise Marks Act Chapter 405 of the Laws of Zambia, and Counterfeiting Trade Mark contrary to section 377 of the Penal Code Chapter 87 the Laws of Zambia.

She says two suspects have been released on Police Bond while three are still detained in Police custody and will appear in court soon.

Ms Katongo has cautioned the general public that trading in counterfeit products is a crime.

The Police Spokesperson is further warning all those found wanting that they will not be spared but will be prosecuted as such acts are detrimental to the economy and have potential to push genuine investors out of business.
