JCTR against artificial lowering of mealie meal prices

The Jesuit Center for the Theological Reflection (JCTR) has advised farmers in the country to consider venturing in producing other crops if their not making profits from producing maize.

JCTR has observed that Zambia is currently back in the days where government controls economic activity which does not support farming as a business.

JCTR Executive Director Leonard Chiti has told Qfm News by telephone that if he was farmer he would stop growing maize if he really wanted to make money.

Father Chiti says he would also stop producing mealie meal if he was a miller because milling too is no longer viable business in the Country.

He says the maneuvers that government is employing to keep the prices of mealie meal in the country low are a recipe for distorting the economy.

Father Chiti states the JCTR is of the view that if government wants to keep the prices of mealie meal low it should devise other measures such as giving better incentives to farmers that are growing maize.

He notes that this is besides allowing millers to also operate in favorable business environment.
