ILO sub –regional tripartite conference adopts Lusaka communiqué

The sub –regional tripartite conference on the ratification and implementation of the ILO protocol of 2014 to Forced Labor Convention has adopted its Lusaka communiqué with a call for immediate ratification of the forced labor protocol among member states.

The delegates at the conference have recognized that the protocol confirms the obligations existing under the Convention No. 29 to suppress forced or compulsory labor, including as an end result of human trafficking.

UN special rapporteur on the contemporary forms of slavery, Urmila Bhoola has disclosed at the close of the 2 days conference that delegates have also recalled the legally binding protocol includes measures for prevention, protection and remedies designed to eliminate contemporary forms of slavery.

Ms. Bhoola says that delegates have also noted in their communiqué that measures for effective suppression of forced or compulsory labor provides further normative guidance on how to give effect to obligations under convention No. 29.

She notes that this is in addition to its accompanying protocol.

Ms. Bhoola states that delegates of the sub–regional tripartite conference stand united in their commitment to the decent work agenda of the ILO.
