DMMU distributes 1,200 metric tons of relief to Southern Province

The Office of the Vice President has dismissed assertions that it has delayed the distribution of relief food to hunger stricken Districts such as Kazungula in Southern Province.

Deputy Minister Lazarus Chungu Bwalya says as far as he is concerned the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) has distributed close 1,200 metric tons of relief to Southern Province.

Mr. Bwalya has told Qfm News that that it is therefore news to hear that hunger in Kazungula has escalated to levels where people have now resorted to eating wild fruits to survive.

He says if there are logistical issues within Kazungula to which the delay of distributing relief food is being attributed to, such issues should have been brought to the attention of his office.

Mr. Bwalya says the DMMU would have sorted out such issues by ensuring that the needy people in the District are provided with relief food.

He says his office will however; deploy DMMU officers to Kazungula to verify reports of the escalating hunger situation in the district.

Mr. Bwalya has appealed to the area Member of Parliament to be in forefront in making sure that the relief food that is already in Southern Province is distributed to the needy people.
