CCMG urges strategies to encourage voter registration

The Christian Churches Monitoring Group (CCMG) has called on the Electoral Commission of Zambia, the civil society organizations and political parties to come up with strategies that will encourage more people to register as voters.

CCMG Project Manager Ifomas Mulewa has noted an increase in political party participation in mobilizing citizens to register as voters from 35% in phase one to 47% in phase two.

In a presentation during a CCMG voter registration stakeholders engagement meeting in Lusaka today, Ms. Mulewa says under phase two of the voter registration exercise, 91% of the registration centers had the process run smoothly without any hitch, while 9% of the centers experienced equipment failures.

She adds the failure by the Department of National Registration to issue some eligible people with National Registration Cards has continued to negatively affect the citizens’ ability to register as voters.

And speaking earlier, National Democratic Institute Resident country Director Taona Mwanyisa noted that the Electoral Commission of Zambia is one of the few electoral management bodies in Southern Africa implementing a fully fledged bio metric voter registration which he said is a plus for Zambia.
