The Zambia National Union of Teachers has welcomed General Education Minister John Phiri’s announcement that the Information Communication Technology (ICT) examination will not be a requirement for selection to grade 10.

ZNUT Public Relations Manager Joe Kasaka says the union has been are vindicated when it warned government that the Information Communication Technology (ICT)examination was not going to work because many schools lacked materials, electricity, internet among others things.

Mr. Kasaka says government was supposed to have initially distributed computers to schools together with solar panels as many schools do not have electricity especially in rural areas.

He notes that government rushed the implementation of the ICT program before putting infrastructure in place.

Mr. Kasaka says the ICT exams were a sham and has since called on government to do its part and provide the necessary equipments if ICT in schools is to become a reality.

He however states that it is disappointing that government has announced that the ICT exams will not be counted after pupils had sacrificed a lot to do the exams.
