RTSA seeks SI to regulate quality of imported tyres

The Road Traffic and Safety Agency (RTSA) is engaging the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry to consider coming up with a Statutory Instrument to regulate the quality of tyres coming into the country.

RTSA Public Relations Manager Mercy Mwila has disclosed to QFM News that the agency is also engaging the Zambia Bureau of Standards (ZABS) to ensure that only quality tyres are imported into the country.

Ms Mwila states that motorists ought to know that tyres have a life span and that their usage beyond the life span results in road accidents through tyre bursts.

She says 5 percent of accidents on Zambian roads are as a result of mechanical accidents resulting from the bad conditions of tyres more especially imported second hand tyres.

SMs. Mwila says it is for this reason that the agency in partnership with ZABS and Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry is planning to introduce an SI that will regulate and monitor the importation of second hand tyres in the country as a way of reducing the high number of road accidents being recorded in the country.
