Delayed rains blessing for voter registration – FODEP

The Foundation for Democratic Process (FODEP) has observed that delayed rains in most parts of the country are a blessing in disguise to the mobile issuance of National Registration Cards and the voter registration exercise especially in flood prone areas.

FODEP has appealed to the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Electoral Commission of Zambia to expedite the two exercises before the onset of the rains.

Executive Director Macdonald Chipenzi says there is need to prioritize areas that are prone to flooding such Chavuma and Zambezi districts in the remaining period of the two exercises.

He says Government and the Electoral Commission of Zambia should take advantage of the delayed rains and register as many voters as possible.

Mr. Chipenzi says the ministry of Home Affairs should shoulder the blame if the ECZ fails to meet its target of new voters.

He states that this considering that the ministry of Home Affairs appears not to have been ready for the mobile issuance of NRCs, while the Electoral Commission of Zambia was ready for the voter registration exercise.
