ZCTU disppointed with the attitude of mine owners

Cosmas-Mukuka

The Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) is disappointed with the response it is getting from the mine owners despite the President’s appeal for them to dialogue with unions in order to save jobs.

ZCTU Secretary General Cosmas Mukuka says while the congress is striving to resolve these issues, mining companies seem to be giving a deaf ear.

He says the ZCTU therefore implores on the stakeholders to institute a monitoring team to ensure that interested parties are in constant dialogue so that an amicable solution is reached in good time.

Mr.Mukuka states that the congress appreciates the efforts of President Lungu in trying to resolve the issues affecting the mining sector.

He laments that miners have continued to lose jobs despite President Lungu’s interventions.

Mr Mukuka said this in a speech read on his behalf by ZCTU Deputy Secretary General Misheck Nyambose, during the official opening of Gender Mainstreaming in trade unions workshop in Lusaka today.

Meanwhile Mr.Mukuka says achieving gender equality is more complicated and requires commitment and political will for real progress to be made.

He says it is clear that the pace at which gender equality is moving in favor of women is nothing but disappointing.

Mr. Mukuka says it is therefore important for trade unions to do some serious introspection if the situation has to change.

And ZCTU women chairperson Milimo Kapombe says the main objective of the workshop is to review the ZCTU Gender policy.
