Local Road Authority Procedures Manual launched

Government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the construction of quality roads in the Country.

Transport and Communication Deputy Minister James Kapyanga says government is also committed to implementing capacity building programmes for the road transport sector.

Mr. Kapyanga says the overall objective of such programmes is to contribute to the promotion of equitable economic growth and poverty reduction and enhancement of food security.

He says to achieve this goal; government is using three pillars namely rendering support in achieving a safe and maintainable core road network; and making contribution towards improving institutional capacity of sector agencies, provincial engineering offices and local road authorities.

Mr. Kapyanga states that making contribution to the promotion of local consulting and construction industry is the other pillar government is undertaking.

He said this in Lusaka today at the launch of the Local Road Authority Procedures Manual which has been developed with the support under the six million Euros European Union grant aided capacity building programme for Zambia’s road transport sector.

And EU Representative Stephen McCluskey has urged the Zambian government to ensure that the launched Local Road Authority Procedures Manual does not remain a nook that collects dust on the shelf.

Mr. McCluskey says the manual should be put to good use because its development has involved wide consultation from various stakeholders.

He says the EU is optimistic that the manual which will be distributed to all the Districts in the Country will greatly contribute to Zambia’s road transport.
