Republican President Edgar Lungu has been called upon to immediately constitute an independent committee of inquiry to investigate what necessitated Police brutality towards innocent student at the Copperbelt University (CBU) resulting in life threatening injuries to several students.

Civil Society for Poverty Reduction (CSPR) Civic Participation and Advocacy Programme Officer Maxson Nkhoma says his organization is seriously concerned with the barbaric and heinous manner in which the Police Command on the Copperbelt tortured the student at CBU.

Mr. Nkhoma says the Barbaric manner in which students were tortured is unacceptable, a fundamental violation of human rights guaranteed in the Republican Constitution and has potential to paint a wrong picture of Zambia’s democratic accolades in the eyes of the international community.

Mr. Nkhoma says it is shamefully unacceptable for the Police on the Copperbelt to have found pleasure to torture students in such a manner instead of protecting them from harm.

He says it is hoped that the Human Right Commission will follow this case to a conclusive end and ensure that erring individual Police Officers are brought before the equality of the law.

Mr. Nkhoma tells QFM that government has a duty to guard the growing public perception associated to poor service delivery in state owned schools from primary school through to the Universities.
