The Zambia Council for Social Development (ZCSD) says it is saddened by the announcement made by China Copper Mines of Chingola to lay off 200 miners.

ZSCD Executive Secretary Lewis Mwape says the job cuts will contribute to the increase in the levels of poverty in the country.

He says it is sad that at a time when the people of Zambia need jobs, jobs are being lost.

Mr. Mwape adds that the suspension of US$50 million worth of investment by the mine is equally a sad development because this money would have helped in growing the economy.

He has implored government to find a lasting solution to the challenges in the mining sector which will result in a win-win situation at the end of the day for both the government and the mining houses.

Mr. Mwape says failure to come up with an amicable solution will result in more job losses in thereby increasing the level of poverty in the country.
