Govt hails UN support towards ending poverty

Government says it continues to rely on the United Nations system and other partners to help access financial resources and the required experience in order to improve the lives of the people by striving to achieve the 2030 vision.

Speaking during the UN Day Reception to celebrate the UN at 70 in Lusaka last evening, State House Deputy Minister, Mulenga Sata says it is gratifying that the UN has continued to help Zambia in ending extreme poveMulenga Sata 2rty, scaling up response to the HIV pandemic, increasing equitable access to quality services and realizing the potential of girls and women through various gender interventions.

Mr. Sata states that Zambia appreciates the assistance received in improving access to sustainable livelihoods and food security as well as assistance in developing institutional capacities for managing livelihoods from the risk of climate change, disasters and environmental degradation.

He says in implementing the revised Sixth National Development Plan (SNDP), the UN has provided support through the ‘delivering as one country team’ under the UN development assistance framework (UNDAF: 2011-2015).

Mr Sata also reiterated that Zambia is cognizant about the He for She Project and supports the efforts being undertaken by the UN to this effect.

And UN Resident Coordinator Janet Rogan congratulated Zambia for submitting its voluntary target for reducing carbon emissions ahead of the Climate Change Summit (COP21) to be held in Paris.

Ms Rogan says no one should be left behind because the environment in which they live has been ruined by deforestation or industrial pollution.
