The opposition Movement for Multi Party Democracy (MMD) has described the salary increments offered to portions of public service as deceitful.

Government has awarded members of the Civil Servants and Allied Workers Union of Zambia and the National Union of Public Service Workers salary increments of between nine and 29 percent.

But MMD Spokesperson Raphael Nakachinda tells QFM News via telephone that even if the government has increased the salaries, the cost of living is still high in Zambia.

Mr. Nakachinda says the cost of living in Zambia has increased by 50 percent and that the increment will not help the public service workers in anyway.

He argues that the last time government increased salaries for civil servants was two years ago and that with the current economic hardships, the increment will not make any sense.

Mr. Nakachinda says the time has come for government to start paying attention to the issues affecting the people and not do things to their advantage.
