A mass rally has been staged in North Korea’s capital, Pyongyang, to mark the 70th anniversary of the ruling Workers’ Party.
Thousands of soldiers took part in a two-hour march in front the country’s supreme leader, Kim Jong-un
It was held in the city’s vast main square, which was marked with chalk to aid the choreography
It was a show of military might, including tanks and missile carriers
Women wearing traditional dresses waved flowers as they passed through the square
Some planes formed the figure 70 in the sky
The BBC’s Steve Evans reports from Pyongyang that scarlet and khaki were the colours that dominated the event
Many became emotional as they passed by the podium where Mr Kim watched the events.
Replica grenades formed part of the uniform for these schoolgirls
Some of those on parade carried the radiation warning symbol – a reference to the country’s controversial nuclear programme.
Soldiers also shouted slogans as they marched
After the parade, some officers sheltered from a heavy downpour
Later in the evening, a torchlight performance formed part of further celebrations.
