YWCA links increase in GBV cases to lack of women empowerment

The Young Women Christian Association (YWCA)has observed that lack of women empowerment has contributed greatly to the increase in cases of Gender Based Violence in the country.

YWCA Men Network National Coordinator, Raymond Havwala says men take advantage of women who have nothing to do and depend on their husbands to fend for them and their children.

He says there is urgent need for stakeholders involved in empowering women to accelerate the rate at which they are helping women to access finances for their businesses.

Mr. Havwala says another factor which is contributing to the increase in GBV cases is the power imbalance that exists between men and women because men feel that they have control over women.

He says there is need for men to change their attitude by respecting women if GBV cases are to be reduced in the country.
