Auditor General Anna Chifungula says she is very angry that most of the cases of misappropriation of public funds highlighted in the audit reports are not followed up by law enforcement agencies.
Dr Chifungula says there is need to change this attitude if the country’s little resources are to be safeguarded.
She says it is painful to see public officers who have been cited for misappropriation of public funds walking freely.
Dr Chifungula has told QFM News in an interview that the slow pace of investigating cases of alleged misappropriation of public funds highlighted in the Audit reports is of great concern to her office.
She says she fears that public officers who have been cited for such cases can do even worse things if their cases are not properly followed up.
Dr. Chifungula states that lack of action makes officers in the habit of misappropriating public funds do even worse things considering that prosecutions take too much time while in certain instances case files go missing and cases end up going nowhere.
Dr. Chifungula explains that in instances were files go missing it means some irresponsible person has decided to hide the file at the expense of national development.
The Auditor General has since urged public officers to be kind to mother Zambia saying the country already has a lot of problems and it is unfair for someone to steal from the little resources the country has.
