ZESCO Limited says it currently has an electricity generation surplus of 1,156 Megawatts.

Making a presentation at a high-level discussion at the ongoing Association of Power Utilities of Africa (APUA) meeting in Dakar,Senegal, ZESCO Managing Director Victor Mapani says the surplus electricity generation follows the successful commissioning of 4 X 150 Megawatts capacity from the 750Megawatts Kafue Lower Power Station.

Mr Mapani says currently, the installed national generation capacity stands at 3,456.8 Megawatts against a peak national demand of approximately 2,300 Megawatts.

He says ZESCO is using internally generated resources to progress the 750 Megawatts Kafue Lower Power station project being constructed at a cost of approximately $2.3 billion to be completed by November 2022.

Mr Mapani who was making a presentation under the theme: “Implementation of the 2063 Agenda of the African Union with respect to the development of power sector in Zambia”, further stated that the availability of reliable electricity is underpinning the current rebound of Zambia’s economy.

He adds that as an established member of both APUA and the Southern Africa Power Pool (SAPP) is currently undertaking construction of transmission lines to ensure ZESCO remains at the centre of power trading among the Eastern,Western,Northern and Southern African states.
