Zambian journalists still experiencing acts of intimidation and harassment

A research conducted by MISA Zambia Chapter has revealed that journalists in Zambia have continued to experience acts of intimidation and harassment from different actors who include political parties cadres and the Police.

According to the research which covered all the ten province of the country, 34 journalists confirmed having either been attacked or harassed in the last six months. 

Lead Consultant Charles Lungu says out of the total number recorded, the highest number which is 11 was attributed to political party cadres and senior party officials.

Making a presentation on the Freedom of Expression Report in Lusaka today, Mr. Lungu says eight cases were attributed to the members of the public while seven cases were attributed to council Chairpersons and district commissioners.

Mr. Lungu says the police were also cited with six cases.

Speaking at the Launch of the report, MISA Zambia National Coordinator Austin yayanda has urged Government to quicken the amendment and repealing of the media laws so that they can be in tandem with the modern democracy.

And Ministry of Information and Media Permanent Secretary Kennedy Kalunga has commended MISA Zambia for being relentless in defending media freedom and freedom of expression.

Meanwhile United States Charge d’ affaires Sheryl Stumbras has observed that  media freedom has improved in the recent months with media outlets that were closed under the previous administration being reopened.
