The Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA)says it is looking forward to the finalization of the ongoing review of the current ZEMA Act.
And ZEMA Northern Regional Manager Crispin Simwanza says the region which includes the Copperbelt Province houses a lot of mining companies who have a history of getting away with environmental offences due to some lacuna in the existing environmental laws.
Mr. Simwanza says at the moment, the regional office cannot do certain things which may be deemed necessary to erring investors because the existing laws do not permit.
He has told Q news in an interview that once the Act is reviewed and clauses strengthened; the bureau will be empowered to address some of the challenges especially pollution of the environment by the mining firms in the region.
