First Speaker of the National Assembly Malungo Attracter Chisangano has called for formulation of risk-informed policies that will climate proof development and build resilience for the economy and communities at risk.

Ms. Chisangano notes that disaster and climatic risks are unprecedentedly on the increase with immense adverse impact on the ecosystem, food and water security.

Speaking during the orientation workshop on the operations of the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit and the role of Members of Parliament in emergencies and disasters, Ms. Chisangano says evidence shows that the country has over the past years experienced a number of climate related hazards such as drought, floods, and extreme temperatures.

She says the intensity and frequency of these hazards is projected to increase due to climate change.

Ms. Chisangano states that the workshop is aimed at sensitizing parliamentarians on the role of the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) under the Office of the Vice President, in disaster risk management including response in the Country.

She notes that lawmakers need this critical knowledge which will help them put a Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) lens to every law, regulation and public policies that are brought to their attention.

Speaking earlier, DMMU National Coordinator, Gabriel Pollen says the advent of climate change poses new and serious challenges to lives and livelihoods.
