Opposition Patriotic Front Members of parliament have welcomed government’s decision to extend fuel subsidies for another three months.

Energy Minister Peter Kapala earlier this week announced that Value Added Tax (VAT) and Import Duty will remain zero-rated on diesel and petrol, while Excise Duty is waived on Diesel and reduced on petrol.

Reacting to this development, leader of the opposition in parliament Brian Mundubile says government has now come to terms with reality and understands why the previous PF government maintained subsidies on fuel.

Speaking when he addressed the media in Lusaka today, Mr. Mundubile has however, wondered if the decision will not jeopardize Zambia’s chances of getting the IMF bailout package.

Speaking at the same briefing, PF whip Stephen Kampyongo expressed concern over information indicating that outgoing Electoral Commission of Zambia Chairperson Justice Esau Chulu is in the process of being arrested and taken to Itezhi-tezhi where he has been reported.

This follows revelations that a named Itezhi-tezhi resident has reported Justice Chulu to Itezhi tezhi police station for allegedly announcing results of a constituency that does not exist during the 2016 General of Election.
