Veteran Politician and Freedom Fighter Sikota Wina has died at the age of 91.

Confirming the sad development, Acting Secretary to Cabinet, Patrick Kangwa says Mr Wina died this morning at the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka after an illness.

Mr Kangwa says the government is consulting the late Wina’s family on funeral arrangements which shall be announced later.

He says the funeral gathering is at the deceased’s residence in Chilanga and has since urged members of the public to observe Covid-19 guidelines as they mourn Mr Wina to avoid spreading the disease.

Mr Wina was among the heroes of Zambia’s liberation struggle and served in Dr Kenneth Kaunda’s first Cabinet in 1964 as the country’s first Minister of Health.

He went on to serve in various ministerial positions in the UNIP regime for over ten years.

Under the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD), Mr Wina served as Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly.

Mr Wina was until his death the last surviving member of Dr Kaunda’s first Cabinet of 1964.
