The International Labor Organization (ILO) says lack of employment opportunities for young people especially is a huge challenge for the labor market currently in Zambia.

ILO director for Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique, George Okutho says the case for Zambia is similar to many sub-Saharan countries where many young people are unemployed.

Mr. Okutho says COVID 19 affected most economies in the region with growth declining and resulting in reduced demand for labor.

He however points out that while demand for labor reduced more graduates where being offloaded on the labor market from training institutions and universities.

Mr. Okutho has stressed the need for government to put in place effective measures aimed at addressing the high unemployment levels.

He has further urged the training institutions to impart necessary and needed skills in graduates which will make them employable.
