Integrity of Zambia’s rich natural resources under severe threat

Acting minister of green economy and environment Elijah Muchima says the UPND government is worried that the integrity of Zambia’s rich natural resources is under severe threat from increased human activity.

Mr muchima has expressed concern that some human induced threats to the ecosystem as pollution, unsustainable harvesting of forests, over fishing and wildlife poaching among other things.

He says these threats are compounded by high levels of poverty and inadequate stakeholder participation in the management of the environment.

Mr. Muchima said this in a speech read on his behalf by central province minister Credo Nanjuwa during the official commemoration of the world environmental day in Mumbwa district today.

Speaking at the same event, food and agriculture organization (FAO) country representative Suze Filippini says there is need for transformative changes in environmental management to promote cleaner and greener livelihoods.

And world wide fund for nature (WWF) Zambia country director Nachilala Nkombo has called on everyone to join the fight for environmental sustainability because environmental stewardship has become a must for everyone.

Meanwhile, civil society representative Lydia Chibambo who is also Zambia climate change network (ZCCN) energy, wash, gender programmes officer has called on citizens to act in ways that safeguard diversity.
