Indaba Agricultural Policy Research Institute (IAPRI) has called on the New Dawn Government to come up with policies that will enhance the export of local farm products by local farmers.

Speaking in an interview with Q-news, IAPRI Executive Director, Chance Kabaghe notes that the current existing policies in the agriculture sector are not supportive to the local farmers as they do not encourage local farmers to sell their products to the outside market.

Mr. Kabaghe states that Zambia’s geographical position should be an advantage to local farmers as they have a wider market looking at the number of neighboring countries.

He also notes that the export of local products will further enhance productivity, performance of the agriculture sector and the whole value chain.

Mr. Kabaghe notes that some neighboring countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) among others have the deficit of some crops such as maize that are produced locally which the local farmers have the capacity to sell locally and internationally.
