The Zambia National Farmers Union (ZNFU) has backed government’s position to allow the continued export of maize despite the country recording a reduction in the production of the crop from the 2021/2022 season.

ZNFU Media and Public Relations Officer, Calvin Kaleyi says where the country can export the excess maize it would be right to do so in order to earn some foreign exchange.

Mr Kaleyi says this will also help Zambia stamp its position in the region as an agricultural hub.

He tells QTV news that the country has plenty of maize which should not be allowed to go to waste, stating that the minister of agriculture is therefore right to allow the continued export of maize.

Mr Kaleyi notes that the decision by government is also a demonstration of policy consistency on the part of the new dawn administration.

He adds that ZNFU agrees with the Minister of Agriculture that the country remains food secure, and that the Zambian people should not be worried about the reduction in maize production which is not a deficit.
