Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry Chipoka Mulenga has note with concern the exploitation of consumers by the business community who are currently enjoying government tax concessions on imported machinery such as electricity generators and solar energy panels among others, but are selling them at high prices on the market.

Mr. Mulenga says the tax concessions are meant help lower the cost of the products on the market and increase the uptake of renewable energy products, but that traders are taking advantage of the tax concessions to make more profits for themselves.

He has since directed statutory institutions under his ministry such as the competition and consumer protection commission (CCPC) to intensify market surveillance and protect consumers from price exploitation.

Mr Mulenga says the business community should do the right thing in supporting government’s efforts in creating a conducive business environment and cushioning consumers from high market prices.
