The Rural Electrification Authority (REA) has targeted over 14,444 new electricity connections in rural areas this year.

This follows government’s allocation of k362.2 million to REA towards the implementation of the 2022 rural electrification projects.

Speaking during a press briefing held in Lusaka today, REA Chief Executive Officer, Linus Chanda says the allocation for the 2022 projects represents an 18% increase from the previous allocation in 2021.

Mr. Chanda says the funds will be allocated to over 87 rural electrification projects around the country including grid development and renewable energy projects.

He states that upon completion of the 2022 electrification projects, REA expects to bring on board over 6,879 connections under grid development and over 7,565 new connections under renewable energy connections in rural areas of Zambia.

And Mr. Chanda has called on Members of Parliament whose areas are not connected to the electricity grid to partner with REA to have their areas connected to the electricity grid.
