Chief Chikwanda of the Bemba speaking people in Mpika district of Muchinga province has bemoaned the increase in incest cases in his chiefdom.
The traditional leader tells Q-news that the chiefdom has between January and March 2022 recorded about 20 incest cases involving his youthful subjects.
Chief Chikwanda who is also the newly elected house of chief’s chairperson has attributed the increase in incest among the young people to illiteracy.
He says most youths in his chiefdom and surrounding areas drop out of school due to lack of resources to sustain their education and end up staying in the villages with nothing productive to do, thereby resort to engaging in such abominable acts.
Chief Chikwanda has however, stated that he is working closely with the anti-gender based violence committee in his chiefdom to curb the vice.
