Disability Rights organizations have lauded president Hakainde Hichilema for appointing Christine Chama, a physically challenged woman as a Commissioner of the Human Rights Commission.

They say the appointment is a demonstration of president Hakainde Hichilema’s commitment to including persons with disabilities in governance and decision making.

Disability Rights Watch National Coordinator, Bruce Chooma tells Q-News that the decision by the president to appoint Ms Chama is fundamental towards fighting discrimination and supporting inclusiveness of persons living with disabilities.

Mr. Chooma notes that women with disabilities have not had a chance to effectively represent themselves despite the unique challenges they face.

And Born Short Living Tall Executive Director, Ntalasha Chisha states that the inclusion of women and people living with disabilities in key governance positions is critical in the incorporation of minority groups and building stable democracies.

Mr. Chisha is hopeful that the voices of women and people living with disabilities will continue to have a positive influence in the nation.

He further states that the appointment of Ms. Chama as a Commissioner of the HRC is a huge step in encouraging the girl child and women with disabilities to aspire for greater things
