IKELENG’I, MUSHINDAMO and Kalumbila districts in North western province have had no water supply and sanitation system since they were declared districts.

This came to light when North Western Water Supply and Sanitation Company Managing Director, Happy Musumali briefed Permanent Secretary in the ministry of water development and sanitation Joe Kalusa who is on a familiarization visit in the province.

Mr Musumali also disclosed that Lufupa river which is the only source of water for Kasempa districts dries up on annual basis , a situation that results in the entire district being without water.

In his presentation, Mr Musumali explained that the water supply coverage in North-western province is only 70% while sanitation services coveragte is at 24%.

He says people in Ikeleng’i,Mushindamo and Kalumbila districts rely on private boreholes and those sunk by the government.

And Mr Kalusa says government will give support to the water utility in its efforts to supply clean water as well as good sanitation services to the people.

He says government is working on measures to install water supply and sanitation infrastructure in the three districts.

Mr Kalusa has also advised the company management to devise mechanisms against encroachment of its installations by getting land title, and also prevent vandalism of its assets.
