Two people have died of suffocation

Two people of Munwe village in Kasama district have died of suffocation while trying to deepen a water well.

The victims identified as James Silwamba, 27 and Donald Nonde 17, a grade nine pupil at a named school met their fate in Lua-luo area of Kasama where they were engaged to deepen a well. 

Chief fire officer at Kasama fire brigade, Albert Mwamba has confirmed the incident to ZANIS in Kasama.

Mr. Mwamba said the incident happened on Tuesday morning.

He explained that the incident happened when the teenager who was in the well digging got trapped due to loss of fresh air.

Mr. Mwamba narrated that it was at this point that the teenager called for help from Mr. Silwamba who was outside the well aiding him to pull the mud.

He added that Mr. Silwamba then sent a rope to rescue Nonde but the rope got cut forcing him to also slide into the well.

Mr. Mwamba said the two suffocated in the well and the fire brigade which came to rescue them found they had already died.

The bodies of the deceased have since been deposited in Kasama general hospital mortuary waiting for burial.

Meanwhile four people have been apprehended in chama district for allegedly stealing eleven bags of fertilizer worth k7, 700.

Muchinga province deputy commissioner of police Lucky Buumba has confirmed the development to QTV news.

Ms. Buumba explains that on 13th December, 2021 Jessy Banda got eleven bags of fertilizer under the farmer input support program (FISP) which she kept in her store, however, one of her children on christmas day discovered that all the bags were missing.

She states that the matter was reported to the police and later police received information from a whistle blower on the whereabouts of the suspects who were later apprehended from kalovia village including the person who bought the fertilizer.
