A consortium of health profession associations is demanding for the appointment of an all inclusive health professions council of Zambia (HPCZ) board with representation from all health profession societies and associations.

The consortium has observed that HPCZ has been operating without a board and without representation from some cadres within the health sector which is illegal according to the laws of Zambia.

The associations represented are the clinical officers’ association of Zambia (COAZ), resident doctors association of Zambia (RDAZ), Zambia society of physiotherapy (ZSP), Zambia medical licentiate practitioners association (ZMLPA), biomedical society of Zambia (BMSZ), public health association of Zambia (PHAZ), pharmaceutical society of Zambia (PSZ) and the radiological society of Zambia.

Speaking on behalf of other associations during a media briefing today, RDAZ president Dr. Brian Sampa says many associations which are not represented in the HPCZ management are often disadvantaged when it comes to employment.

Dr. Sampa adds that the consortium is not in support of the current health professions bill of 2020 because it was developed without consultation with stakeholders; hence some clauses are not in favor of some professions within the health sector.

And Dr. Sampa has called on the government to employ the 11,200 healthcare workers according to demand which is going to favor the patients whom healthcare workers are serving.

He says when healthcare workers are employed equitably; healthcare service delivery is going to be enhanced in pursuit of universal health coverage for all by the year 2030.
