Two traditional leaders have stressed the need for farmers to seriously embrace crop diversification during this farming season.

They have also urged farmers in their chiefdoms and across the country to seriously consider planting trees during this year’s planting season in an effort to address climate change and deforestation.

Chief Chanje of the Chewa people in Chipata District is encouraging framers in his chiefdom to plant the glycedia tree which is one of the fastest growing tree as they plant their crops this farming season.

He says it will be easier for farmers to plant trees as they plant their crops.

And Chief Moyo of the Tonga speaking people of Pemba District has called on farmers in his chiefdom to diversify to other crops which can grow in either drought or floods conditions considering that the rain pattern is now unpredictable due to climate change.

The traditional leader stresses the need for farmers to embrace change and begin to move away from growing maize alone despite it being a staple food.
