Respect freedom of expression,law enforcers urged

The United States Embassy in Lusaka has urged law enforcement authorities to implement the pronouncement by President Hakainde Hichilema regards the promotion of freedom of expression in the country.

Speaking during a capacity building training workshop for Journalists on effective reporting on human rights issues in Lusaka today, US Embassy Deputy public affairs officer Julie Mellin says law enforcement agencies should not arrest anyone for simply exercising their freedom of expression.

Mrs Mellin notes that some media practitioners in some countries including Zambia are harassed for simply exercising their freedom of expression.

She states that a free and independent press is vital in the promotion of democracy in the country.

Officiating at the workshop, Information and media Minister Chushi Kasanda hopes the training will highlight a number of human rights violations in the rural communities which include early marriages,domestic violence,gender based violence and harmful traditional practices.

Ms Kasanda has reminded the media that they can only realize these issues through factual,objective and balanced reporting.

Speaking earlier, MISA Zambia National Director Austin Kayanda says the Access to information bill once enacted will enable members of the public to make informed decisions as they will be fully informed about their human rights.
