The cost of living for a family of five in Lusaka as measured by the JCTR Basic Needs and Nutrition Basket (BNNB) for November, 2021 stood at K8,145.28.

Jesuit Center for Theological Reflection (JCTR) Executive Director Father Muyebe says this is already far beyond the reach of most households in Lusaka.

He says the ripple effects from the upward adjustment in fuel prices is the increase in the cost of living which will negatively affect the poor and vulnerable in society.

Speaking when he addressed the media in Lusaka, Father Muyebe has since advised government to ensure that the TAZAMA pipeline becomes operational in order to reduce on the cost of transportation in Zambia.

And Father Muyebe has welcomed the decision by the Energy Regulation Board (ERB) to start reviewing fuel pump prices every thirty days instead of sixty days.

HE says the review of fuel prices every thirty days and the pricing trigger band of 2.5 percent change in wholesale prices should be strictly adhered to.

Father Muyebe says this will allow for price stability when new fuel prices are introduced whilst providing for smooth and gradual fuel adjustments.
