Increase in the circulation of small arms and light weapons worries SACCORD

The Southern African Centre for the Constructive of Disputes (SACCORD) is concerned with the increase in the circulation of small arms and light weapons which have contributed to acts of political violence an ultimate violation of human rights.

In a statement on human rights day which falls today, SACCORD executive director Boniface Cheembe notes most of these small arms and light weapons appear not to be registered.

Mr Cheembe is encouraging those in possession of small arms and light weapons to voluntarily surrender them to the police.

he states that there is no punishment for those who volunteer to give up these weapons.

Mr. Cheembe has also urged the Zambia police to increase sensitization on the amnesty to enable more people come forward.
