Police detain Kampyongo

Police in Lusaka have detained and recorded a warn and caution Statement from former Minister of Home Affairs Steven Kampyongo for the offence of Endangering Safety Contrary to Section 8(f) of CAP 445 of the Safety of Civil Aviation Act of the Laws of Zambia.

Zambia Police Service Spokesperson Rae Hamoonga has confirmed the development to QTV news in a statement.

Mr Hamoonga says Particulars of the Offence are that Mr. Kampyongo together with others are alleged to have endangered the safety of an Aircraft and its Passengers on 2nd January, 2015 at Kalalatekwe School grounds in Shiwang’andu District in Muchinga Province.

He states that Mr Kampyongo is yet to be formerly charged and arrested at the place of commission of the offence.

And Mr Kampyongo’s lawyer George Chisanga says the former Minister is detained at Chelston Police Station in Lusaka after he was summoned for questioning.

Mr Chisanga says Police intend to effect the arrest of his client in Shiwang’andu where the alleged offence is believed to have been committed.

He adds that Police intend to charge the Shiwang’andu Member of Parliament in connection with the incident that happened on 2nd January, 2015 were a UPND campaign helicopter was prevented from landing by stone throwing PF cadres.

Mr Chisanga says Mr Kampyongo is not aware of the circumstances that led to the said helicopter not landing as he was only alerted afterwards.

Mr. Chisanga believes the former home affairs minister will spend a night in Police detention.
