Hope for Human Rights Executive Director Smart Chanda says his organization is concerned that nothing much has been done to protect people’s lives after revelations that traces of fecal matter were found in water samples from selected townships in Lusaka.

Mr. Chanda says he expected the Ministry of Health to take the revelations as a matter of urgency and implement measures such as supplying people with chlorine and safe drinking water.

He says it is unfortunate to note that the development last month was a mere announcement because nothing has been done by the government so far.

Mr. Chanda has wondered how Minister of Health Sylvia Masebo expects people to take such a message with seriousness in the absence of a call to action by the government.

And Mr. Chanda has questioned why the statement was made if people would still be allowed to continue drinking the same water that had been found to be unfit for human consumption.

He says a fact-finding mission on the ground by his organization has concluded that no measures are being taken to correct the situation in communities.
