Informal sector critical to economic growth

Minister of Small and Medium Enterprise Development Elias Mubanga has says the informal sector play an important role in the growth of the country’s economy.

Mr. Mubanga says marketers are the largest employers in the economy as they provide self-reliant employment through entrepreneurship.

Mr. Mubanga was speaking when Zambia national marketers credit association (ZANAMACA) paid a courtesy call on him at his office today, where he added that his ministry will support and work with the association in terms of policy and access to finance.

He urged ZANAMACA to help in the identifying of the potential marketeers who can be trained and later empowered by the government through his ministry so as to scale up their businesses.

Mr. Mubanga disclosed that the ministry will introduce hi-tech initiatives in the markets in order to help marketeers in the smooth transaction and selling of their merchandise.

And speaking earlier ZANAMACA president Mupila Kameya says the working relationship between association and the ministry of small and medium enterprise development will help to formalize the informal economy through many activities and programs already designed by ZANAMACA.

He proposed that government through the ministry of small and medium enterprise and its cooperating partners supports the association national roll out initiative of bringing every informal sector player on board to have their details registered.

Mr. Kameya says the information gathered would assist the government and local authorities to know the actual numbers of traders in each trading place and ascertain the total expected revenue to be collected and also help in planning of market development.
