MOH confirms outbreak of Typhoid and Dysentery

The Ministry Of Health Has Confirmed The Outbreak Of Typhoid And Dysentery In Lusaka District.

Delivering A Ministerial Statement On The Diarrhea Outbreak Update, Heath Minister Sylvia Masebo Said Lusaka Has So Far Reported 2 Cases Of Typhoid And 10 Cases Of Dysentery.

Ms Masebo Says Of The 10 Cases Of Dysentery 6 Have Been Reported In Lusaka District While 4 Have Been Reported In Kafue District.

Meanwhile The Lusaka District Has Seen An Increase In The Number Of Diarrhea Cases In The Last Three Months From 357 Cases In July To 1,062 Cases Currently Indicating An Increase Of 705.

Ms. Masebo Says All Six Sub Districts Have Been Affected With Kanyama, Matero And Chelston Reporting The Highest Cases.

The Minister Has Attributed The Increased Cases To The Consumption Of Water With Feacal Matter And The Historical Water And Sanitation Challenges In Lusaka.

She Has Since Stated That Her Ministry Has Partnered With The Zambia National Public Health Institute (ZNPHI) And The Local Authorities To Increase Community Awareness, Ensure For Improved Access To Turn Around Time Laboratory Test Results, Intensified Water Quality And Disinfecting Of Pit Latrines Among Others.

She Has Also Disclosed That Working With ZNPHI And The Cholera Task Force, Her Ministry Will Commence The Oral Cholera Immunization For Lusaka District In The First Week Of November 2021 To Prevent A Cholera Outbreak.
