Stakeholders in the education sector are expectant the education sector will receive an upward adjustment of between 16 and 20 percent in the budgetary allocation from the 2022 national budget.

Secondary Schools Teachers Union of Zambia (SESTUZ) general secretary Sitibekiso Wamuyuwa says the downward trend in terms of budgetary allocation to the education sector seen in the past four years should not repeat itself in the 2022 national budget.

Speaking to q-news, Mr. Wamuyuwa notes with concern that the budgetary allocation to the education sector has dropped from about 18 percent in 2018 to about 11.4 percent in 2021.

He says the UPND has clearly stated in its manifesto that it intends to make the education sector vibrant and the backbone of the country’s economic recovery process; hence the need for the budgetary allocation to the sector to be equal to what it intends to achieve.

Mr Wamuyuwa states that the education sector currently needs proper teaching aids to help delivery quality lessons, more teachers employed, enough classrooms and desks among other things.

and National Action for Quality Education of Zambia (NAQUEZ) executive director Aaron Chansa is expectant that the education sector will receive not less than 20 percent budgetary allocation with more funds being channeled towards teacher recruitment and procurement of desks.
